The artisanal intelligence behind Davide Cancogni’s marble sculptures

In his marble studio, Davide Cancogni reveals how a childhood by the sea and decades of craftsmanship shape his marine-inspired sculptures—where patience, intuition, and “artisanal intelligence” guide every detail.

Sculptor Davide Cancogni welcomes us into his studio to share the story behind his work and his lifelong connection to marble. Raised by the sea and coming from a family of fishermen, Cancogni naturally developed a fascination with marine life—an inspiration that now defines much of his sculptural language.

Working directly on marble, he sketches most of his designs on the stone before carving, carefully shaping volume and refining intricate details over days of patient work. Many of his tools are custom-made, reflecting a deep knowledge of craftsmanship developed over nearly thirty years.

Cancogni describes his process through a concept he calls “artisanal intelligence”: the ability to combine manual skill, experience, and the right tools at the right moment. His sculptures—often depicting starfish, shells, and seahorses—seek to communicate peace, beauty, and a sense of well-being.

For him, the goal is not to replicate nature, but to transform it—turning familiar forms from the sea into works of art that carry both emotional meaning and sculptural presence.
