About the artist

Sudo Rie

Japan

Rie Sudo was born in 1985 in Saitama, Japan, and grew up in Ohio, USA, and Cheltenham, UK. She studied Fine Art in the UK from 1998 to 2003 and later pursued Life Science (M.Bioch) at the University of Oxford. In 2011, she joined the Setsu Mode Seminar in Tokyo, focusing on life model drawing and painting. A member of the Japan Contemporary Art Association (JCAA), Sudo currently lives and works in Yokohama. Her watercolor work explores themes of "unsteadiness" and "insecurity," often depicting landscapes, human figures, and still life. Her interest lies in capturing the natural instability of "still" forms, especially inorganic scenery. Her recent works have leaned towards more abstract expressions.
